Fenerbahçe Players Walk Off in Turkish Super Cup Chaos

Unprecedented Scenes in Istanbul

Fenerbahçe's U-19 Team Takes the Field

The Turkish Super Cup final descended into chaos on Friday, April 7th, 2024, as Fenerbahçe players walked off the pitch in protest. The incident occurred just one minute into the match against rivals Galatasaray at the Başakşehir Fatih Terim Stadium in Istanbul. Fenerbahçe fielded their under-19 team, led by assistant manager Zeki Murat Göle, in response to a dispute over the eligibility of players from their main squad. The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) had ruled that five of Fenerbahçe's suspended players were ineligible for the match.

As the game kicked off, Fenerbahçe players immediately walked off the field, leaving Galatasaray with no opponents. The referee was forced to abandon the match after just 60 seconds.

The chaos erupted due to a long-standing rivalry between Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray, two of the most successful clubs in Turkish football. The incident has sparked widespread debate about the state of the sport in the country.

Fenerbahçe's decision to field their youth team has been widely criticized. The club has been fined 50,000 Turkish lira ($6,500) by the TFF and could face further sanctions.
